This quarterly newsletter is late, but it has been a rather busy
couple of months with the Expansion Project in full swing. As of
Sept 1, we took over the ground floor and the museum will now occupy
that space as well as the back half of the second floor. This
expansion will allow us to have a gift shop and a viewing room where
the introductory video will be shown. Meanwhile, we started packing nutcrackers in preparation for the move. Bare shelves appeared here and there, and many cases in the second room had to be completely emptied and ready to be moved. Boxes and boxes of nutcrackers were put in storage. The cases in the first room have remained in place and will be moved later. Many cases were brought down the stairs to the street level and moved into their new places. This was a tedious job as the flooring and walls in this older building were not even in places. Then new cases which had been built off site were moved into place. These new cases, together with a long wall case which will display nutcrackers representing the many holidays, will add about 100 lineal feet of display area. As work continued on the main level, our building manager and helper were arranging clean and safe storage shelving in the basement for those priceless items in the archives of the Greater Leavenworth Museum which will later open its doors in the front half of the second level of the building. And here is a peek of the beautiful staircase railing design---it is bound to be the showpiece of the new Nutcracker Museum. At the present time, painting is set to begin. The electricians will then install their fixtures, yards and yards of shelving will be placed on brackets, and finally the remaining cases on the second floor will be moved down. After that, the wonderful old antique nutcrackers and those delightful, loveable, toothy figures will be placed in their new home for all to enjoy. The giant Mouse King and Karl, the museum mascot, will be ready for photographs, a new counter will be stocked with Nutcracker Hunt papers and the gift shop will be ready for the Holiday rush. |
