This charming ivory sculpture depicts a gnome of the woods holding at his
back with both hands a big beer mug. He is smiling down to his extra long
beard upon which sits a lady bug, the only colored part of the sculpture.
This nutcracker was sculpted out of a single piece of ivory and
measures 5.5 inches. It was carved in Switzerland, dating 1840-1850. The
piece is signed by W Geiger fecit, Lugano. (“fecit” is the typical way to
sign a piece with a Latin word up to the middle of the 19th century)
