New at the Museum... January
2013 This nutcracker, carved of ebony, depicts
a newly captured slave being readied for transport. It was
carved in France about 1860, when the anti-slave movement was
very strong. Slavery was abolished in the United States with the
13th amendment to the constitution on January 31, 1865.

| (This nutcracker
is on loan to the museum from the private collection of
Arlene Wagner) |
Note the rough carving of the body in contrast to the smoothness
of the loin cloth and chains. From the workshop of Lothar
Junghänel of Germany we show carvings of three famous World War
II personalities…..United States General George S. Patton, noted
British Commander Bernard Montgomery, and German Field Marshall
Edwin Rommel, popularly known as the Desert Fox.
